Hillel House, situated in the pleasant, leafy suburb of Edgbaston, provides kosher accommodation for Jewish students in Birmingham under the auspices of a local Jewish management committee.

 

The University of Birmingham campus is a mere 10-minute walk away whilst Aston University and Birmingham City University can be reached by bus in approximately half an hour, or by train from University Station.

The Selly Oak and Harborne shopping centres are each within easy walking distance - Harborne within 10 minutes, and Selly Oak in under half an hour.

 

There are two Orthodox and one Progressive synagogues in Birmingham. There is a also a small synagogue at Birmingham Jewish Community Care's Andrew Cohen House situated in Stirchley. Students would be welcomed at any of them.

Hillel House set in just under an acre of grounds comprises three buildings: the Main House, Jacey and the Lodge/Annex. The Main House, a large converted Edwardian House, contains the recreational and laundry facilities on the ground floor as well as the supervised kosher kitchen and cloakrooms with facilities for the disabled. The laundry room (for residents only) has 2 washing machines and 2 dryers (at no extra cost to use). The recreational facilities include a large communal lounge with Sky TV, sports and surround sound. The large dining room where Friday night dinners are served and meetings/events are held, and the library which also doubles up as a synagogue, are also found on the ground floor.  The upper floors of the Main House are purely residential with superior ensuites, regular ensuites, large and standard rooms of various sizes and bathroom facilities providing accommodation for 15 residents.  Jacey is a purpose built residential block built in the 70s which accommodates 21 residents in superior ensuite rooms, ensuite rooms and standard rooms. The Lodge is a three bedroomed small house with a living room, kitchen and shower room /toilet and attached it is the Annex which is a superior ensuite.

 

Fast, wireless internet access is included in the rent, and there are phone lines available to commission if required in every room. Parking for a limited number of cars in the carpark is also available free of charge on a first come, first served basis. The recreational rooms, common areas and bathrooms/toilets are cleaned daily (Mon - Fri) in the Main House and Jacey.

 

Communal events run by JSoc, the Chaplaincy and other visiting groups provide a warm sociable environment for all students (Hillel residents and non residents), regardless of their level of observance.
